Thinking about building your own Passivhaus? Worried about how to balance cost, planning permission and building performance?

Come and see what’s possible and ask the questions that really matter.

At our Anchorage Passivhaus Open Day on Saturday 14 November, we’ll be opening the doors to this striking Certified Passivhaus in Wyre Piddle, Worcestershire.

But this isn’t just an opportunity to look around a beautiful house. It’s a chance to get behind the design decisions, technical challenges and planning journey that made the project possible.

Three questions we’re often asked:

🏡 How did we achieve Passivhaus Certification with such an intricate building geometry?Anchorage is far from the simple box often associated with Passivhaus. Its angular form, dramatic cantilever and complex junctions were carefully designed and detailed to achieve an airtightness of just 0.47 ACH @ 50Pa and a heating demand of 8.0 kWh/m²/year.

📋 How did we secure planning permission for a contemporary home in a traditional Conservation Area? The house sits on a challenging riverside site, surrounded by listed buildings and within a sensitive Conservation Area. The planning journey required careful consideration of context, design and communication — and ultimately demonstrated that contemporary architecture and historic settings can work together.

🔥 And how does the house work without an air source heat pump or a conventional heating system? Not only does Anchorage uses the principles of Passivhaus - a highly insulated and airtight envelope, careful solar design and heat recovery - to dramatically reduce the amount of energy needed to heat the home, but we also don't use an air source heat pump, which removed the cost and maintenance associated.

For anyone considering a self-build, these are the sorts of questions worth asking before you start designing.

Come along, explore the house, talk to the architects and owners, and find out what it really takes to turn an ambitious idea for a self-build into a comfortable, high-performance home.
