After six weeks of scaffolding work, the sheer scale of Bradby Hall means we are still two lifts away from reaching the timber cupola. However, today presented a fantastic opportunity to climb to roof level and gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable structure.

Together with Lewis Grant and Tineke Rennie from East Hertfordshire District Council, we assessed the roof's condition. In particular, we examined areas where historic lime mortar torching has eroded the aluminium nails which attach the clay tiles. We explored options for repair or replacement that strike a balance between the client’s needs, the Conservation Team’s expectations and what is practically achievable.

Meanwhile, brick and stone cleaning is now underway, as decades of moss and weathering are sympathetically removed.

The restoration journey of Bradby Hall continues - an exciting chapter in the life of this extraordinary building.
