We are excited to see our Anchorage Passivhaus project featured in its second publication of the summer: The Self Builder Magazine.

“A Challenging Undercurrent” is the story of an ambitious self-build that proved to be every bit as challenging as its riverside setting suggests. Overlooking the River Avon, this striking cantilevered home was designed for experienced self-builders Frank and Kerry, who set out to create a contemporary, highly sustainable house on a steep and constrained site. What followed was a catalogue of unexpected obstacles, from planning challenges and difficult ground conditions to financial pressures and the collapse of several companies involved in the build.

The article takes you behind the scenes of the project, exploring how these challenges were overcome and how the original vision was ultimately realised. Along the way, it reveals the thinking behind the home's distinctive architecture, its Passivhaus approach and the clever ways the design responds to the landscape, from its dramatic cantilever to its carefully considered materials and expansive views. It is an honest and fascinating account of what can happen when architectural ambition, sustainability and the realities of a complex self-build collide — and why, despite everything, the result was worth the struggle.
